The Corporate Director, Environmental Health & Safety will lead and direct the Environmental Health & Safety function for multiple facilities and fleets in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Michigan. This is a hands-on role that will draw upon functional expertise, experience with transportation/fleet safety, and strategic leadership to further develop a positive safety culture and build robust monitoring, training, data analysis, prevention, reporting, and enforcement programs, policies, and procedures.

What will you do?  
  • Strengthen and activate Emterra Group’s Environment, Health & Safety Strategic Initiative;
  • Oversee the development and implementation of all fleet and compliance programs across the organization;
  • Develop, drive and sustain initiatives that support a strong organizational safety culture;
  • Create and ensure consistent application of EH&S policies/procedures throughout all sites/locations ensuring company business and compliance goals are achieved;
  • Establish interpersonal rapport with all levels of the organization to increase employee engagement and drive improved communication to build a self-sustaining culture of EH&S;
  • Bring management attention, focus and action to sites or department which require improvements in their safety performance; 
  • Using a consultative participative management approach, work with management toward continuous improvement of safety;
  • Evaluate regulatory trends to determine operational, financial or other business impacts and implement industry best practices;
  • Develop, implement and analyze metrics on a corporate level to assess progress in meeting business objectives, make informed decisions, and ensure functional accountability to the organization;
  • Be responsible to lead the creation and implementation of a corporate EH&S training and development programs (materials, processes, tools) for all levels in the organization, fleet, plant, and office environments;
  • Implement technology to deliver, monitor, report, and record EH&S training;
  • Provide leadership, mentoring and direction for all Emterra safety professionals/representatives;
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
 
What will you bring?
  • 7–10 years’ experience in a progressively senior health and safety positions – most recently in a Director role;
  • Previous experience in fleet safety and compliance is a requirement;
  • College diploma or university degree in a recognized Occupational Health and Safety program or an equivalent combination of experience and training;
  • CRSP designation or in the process of certification;
  • Knowledge of applicable provincial environmental and safety legislations/regulations and Occupational Health and Safety standards (BC, SK, MB, ON);
  • Experience working with diverse stakeholders, including management, non-unionized and unionized workforce, clients, industry associations, enforcement agencies, etc.;
  • Proven ability to direct, manage, motivate, lead and negotiate with diverse populations and multi-functional, geographically dispersed teams;
  • Familiar with Safety Groups and COR Program;
  • Extensive relevant experience with various provincial regulatory bodies (including Ministry of Transportation, Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Environment, Department of Transportation, Workers Compensation Board, etc.);
  • Proven track record in designing and delivering safety programs;
  • Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills;
  • Excellent quantitative analysis and interpretation skills;
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint);
  • Experience in the waste management industry, transportation or manufacturing;
  • Willingness and ability to travel as required;
